Cynthia Skaggs Scurria is the Chair of the Department of English, Languages, and Mass Communications at Alcorn State University. She also serves as the Director of the University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), Writing Matters. Dr. Scurria earned her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and practiced as a Certified Professional Accountant for 10 years. She then earned her doctorate in English from Tulane University in New Orleans, specializing in 19th Century American Literature, with a particular focus on Realism and Naturalism. Dr. Scurria began her career at Alcorn in 2003 as a part-time professional tutor in the Alcorn Writing Center. She joined the English faculty in 2004 and began serving as chair in 2007. A native of Louisiana, Dr. Scurria and her family have lived in Vicksburg for nearly 20 years.
