For the past twenty years,Dr.Byrd has understood the challenges and rewards of educating and being educated. Through hard work and a sincere dedication, she has managed to accomplish various educational and professional goals despite adverse circumstances that could have hindered her success. 

She began her academic matriculation experience at Southern University, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she received a BA in Broadcasting. She decided to further her education by seeking a MALS in Liberal Arts from Grambling State University, from there, she sought a Ed.S in Educational Technology from Northwestern State University in the Natchitoches, Louisiana and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication and Media Arts from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL.

She began a teaching career at Grambling State University as an Instructor in the Mass Communication Department and ventured out to teach in other colleges and universities to include; Bossier Parish Community College, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and Wiley College. Presently, she serves as the Chair, for the Department of Mass Communication at Alcorn State University in Alcorn State, MS. She previously held the position of Chair of the Communication Department at East Texas Baptist University, where she developed the Mass Communication curriculum.

Dr.Byrd's philosophy of life is biblically influenced and simply worded, "write the vision and make it plain, for the vision is for an appointed time."

She is the proud mother of three children, Clay, Jr. (20) D'Andrea (16) and Christopher (12).



 
Jerome "J" Myles Sr.

Jerome E. Myles, Sr. is the Gospel Music Director for WPRL 91.7 FM "The Gold" Radio Station. He is a native of Natchez, Mississippi, He is a 1979 graduate of North Natchez High School in Natchez, Mississippi. Jerome attended Natchez College where he graduated in 1982 with Associate of Arts in Music and Communications.

Jerome has been fortunate to receive several awards. Most Influential Person in Natchez, Mississippi 1998; State Wide Gospel Announcer of The Year at the 27th Annual Gospel Music Awards in Jackson, Mississippi 2005;Resolution Award from the Mayor and Board of Alderman in the City of Natchez 2005; Best Underwriting Commercial 2005; and Band Announcer for ASU Sounds of Dynamite Band 2007.

Jerome is the son of Ruth Norbitt, Carrie B. Myles and the late Rev. James P. Myles of Natchez, Mississippi. He is married to the former Elizabeth Benjamin of Pattison, Mississippi and the father of four children Jerome, Jr., Derrick, Devyn and Kobe.



Charles Edmond

Charles T. Edmond Jr. has been the Sports Director  for WPRL91.7 FM for sixteen years. Mr.Edmond is a native of St. Louis Missouri, He is a 1986 graduate of University City High School in St. Louis, Missouri. Charles attended Grambling State University where he graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication.

Mr.Edmond has been fortunate to receive the following awards.

Mr.Edmond is the son of Charles and Ruth Edmond Sr.of St.Louis,Missouri.He also has one sister Ms.Jonna Edmond who also lives in St.Louis,Missouri.



Larry K. Sanders

Mr. Sanders is an Instructor of Mass Communication and News Director at WPRL 91.7 FM at Alcorn State University. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has worked as a contributing writer in several newspapers and taught several years at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and a year and a half at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. Sanders has served on several academic committees in his collegiate tenure which include but are not limited to the Advising Committee, Academic Committee, and the Grievance Committee.

Mr. Sanders is a member of NABJ, ICA, AEJMC, American Association of University Professors, BCA, a Mason and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. His teaching interests include Feature Writing, Radio Production I & II, Introduction to Mass Communication, Public Relations and the Theory of Mass Communication. His teaching philosophy is that all students are educable. He is currently doing research on the influence the media has on African-American males in the United States.


















Monique Norman Brown

Monique C. Norman-Brown has work here for 16 years.

Mrs.Norman-Brown is native of Lorman, Mississippi, She is a 1984 graduate of Jefferson County High School, where she was a member of the FBLA, VICA, Cheerleader Squad, Jefferson County High School Choir, JROTC, and Jefferson County High School Band.

In 1998 she graduate from Alcorn State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Administrative Office Management. And in 2007 she received a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics.As a student she was member of the A.S.U. Gospel Choir, Agricultural Economics Club, and NABJ while enrolled at Alcorn State University.

Mrs.Norman-Brown is a member of the Fellowship M.B. Church  in Lorman, Mississippi. she is  married to  LaZerick Brown Sr. She has two daughters Priya & Peyton Brown.


 

Craig Hunt

Mr.Hunt is an announcer for WPRL-91.7 FM   a former student worker who enjoyed setting the atmosphere for R&B Mr.Hunt is a member of NABJ (National Association of Black Journalist). He majored in Mass Communication Broadcast in 1996.

Mr.Hunt is a native of Natchez, Mississippi, He is a 1996 graduate of Natchez Public School system. He has been employed with the Natchez-Adams School District for the past 2 years .He is a Paraprofessional with the district.

Mr.Hunt is the oldest son of Eddie & Toni Hunt, and he is the sibling of Eddie Jr. and Latoya Hunt of Atlanta, GA.


Gemario Chavez Brooks

Gemario Chavez Brooks was born June 27, 1985 to the loving parents of George and Gwendolyn Brooks of Port Gibson, MS. Gemario is a 2003 graduate of Port Gibson High School where he was a member of the marching band and football team. He was also rank #25 among his class. He was chosen as one of Who's Who Among American High School Students. He then continued his education to Hinds Community College in Utica, MS. He majored in General Studies while attending the Junior College. He then transferred to Alcorn State University where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication. While attending Alcorn Gemario was writer for Alcorn's school news paper "The Alcorn Campus Chronicle." Gemario is also a three-time Dean Scholar at the institution. While majoring in Communication he recieved the Layout and Designer of the year award and Portfolio of the year from his intermship at the Port Gibson Reveille.

            Jason Palmer

He brings a smooth confident personality to the scenic campus of Alcorn State University.

Jason is a graduate of Highland Park High School in Topeka, Kansas, with a GPA of 3.50 and transferred to Alcorn from Johnson County Community College in Kansas City. While in high school Jason received 11 Varsity Letters in the following sport: wrestling, football, track and golf. Jason participated in the Kansas state wrestling and track meets in 2004 and 2005. Jason was a finalist for the Most Inspirational Male Athlete in Shawnee County and has received several other awards and honors, including the African American Leadership Youth Award in 2005. Although you hear his voice over the radio, Jason has also appeared on the NBC television "Today Show".

Jason is the son of Duke and Darlene Hughes-Palmer, Topeka Kansas. His mother, Darlene is an Alcorn State Alum from the class of 1972. Jason plans to graduate in 2010 with his degree in Mass Communication Broadcasting.

National On-Air Personalities

Born in Memphis and raised in the Midwest, Dee Dee Bridgewater moved to New York and as Glinda the Witch in The Wiz on Broadway -- won a 1975 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical. "JazzSet," which airs Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. provides another stage for this talented singer. In this "role" Dee Dee takes listeners on the road with her to top clubs, concerts and festivals for select performances by the musicians of the moment, established performers and new faces on the jazz scene. Nancy Wilson

Nancy Wilson's musical style is so diverse that it is hard to classify. Over the years her repertoire has included pop style ballads, jazz and blues, show tunes and well known standards. She brings her extraordinary talents to WJSU as the host of "Jazz Profiles." The program chronicles the people, places and events in jazz. The varied topics for "Jazz Profiles" range from in-depth portraits of legendary personalities who have made jazz what is today to comprehensive looks at jazz instruments and narration. Farai Chideya

Farai Chideya, Harvard grad and former ABC correspondent is host of "News & Notes." This program that gives voice to issues that are important to Black America. The program serves as a window through which all Americans can examine the significant issues facing a diverse society. The interview and magazine show presents newsmakers, opinion leaders, and commentators to explore the events, trends, and ideas that shape the African-American experience. Hear Farai Monday through Friday at 12:00 Noon

Michel Martin

Michel Martin, who came to NPR in January 2006 to develop "Tell Me More," has spent more than 25 years as a journalist, first in print with major newspapers and then in television. "Tell Me More" marks her debut as a full-time public radio show host. This one-hour daily NPR news talk show made its national premiere April 30, 2007 on public radio stations around the country and has made a big splash in the industry.
