WPRL 91.7 FM -- THE GOLD

WPRL 91.7 FM is a 3,000 watt FM Public Radio station that is licensed to Alcorn State University.  WPRL started transmitting in 1987. As of today it serves more than 30,000 listeners in Southwest Mississippi and Louisiana. WPRL offers the best in local and national programs such as: Tell Me More with Michelle Martin, News and Notes hosted by Fara Chideya, Morning Edition and Fresh Air.

WPRL is a Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) qualified radio station. It is an affiliated member station of National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI) and Associated Press (AP). WPRL broadcasts seven days a week. The daily hours of operation are from 6:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

WPRL is unique in that it provides the listening audience with their favorite musical genres.  A  majority of the listening audience are big fans of the gospel show: “He’s Worthy To Be Praised,” hosted by Jerome “J” Myles, Sr., Gospel Music Director.  WPRL also provides the listeners with several hours of Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop and Old School music.

WPRL's audience consists of 90% African American rural listeners.  WPRL ensures that the audience in its 80-mile radius is informed about issues that are relevant and important to the community.
